"Easy to lay" A misogynistic case in point

In the news today, a flooring company took down a billboard poster they had put up with a woman in a tight dress and high heels and the tag line 'It's so easy to lay'.

Were they saying that the flooring is so easy to lay that a woman can do it, or, it's easy to lay, like this woman? The company was asked about it and the only comment made is that they've removed it as soon as they were made aware it was causing offence. The reality is we'll never know exactly which of those scenarios were floated around the board room table although we might make some assumptions about the misogynistic tendencies of those coming up with the ideas.

The thing is, this is representative of the current culture. It's death by a thousand papercuts. The continuous microaggressions against women. You might stand up and shout "how on earth does this happen in 2023?", but the answer is apparent. Because they are allowed to. Because it is still seen as acceptable to make jokes, public ones at that, at the expense of women. It wasn't one person making this decision. A number of people signed off on it, confirming that this is acceptable at every level within that company.

This is what rape culture looks like. Combined with last weeks news that rapists can no longer be incarcerated because there is no room in prisons. It's laughable really because one of the worst kept secrets of the UK justice system is that rapists barely get arrested and tried, never mind convicted and sent to prison. The mock outrage in the press about that story was honestly sickening.

I've been trying more recently to continually point my writing in this sphere to Jesus. But right now I'm stuck in lament.
