Do not hear what I am not saying - The Fall

Going back to Genesis in my reading has been revelatory. I have been circling the scriptures and trying to reconcile in my heart and mind why the concept of male headship makes no sense to me, despite listening to articulate folk explain the complementarian view.

Then God said. "Let us make mankind in our image, in our likeness, so that they may rule over the fish in the sea and the birds in the sky, over the livestock and all the wild animals, and over all the creatures that move along the ground. So God created mankind in his own image, in the image of God he created them; male and female he created them. God blessed them and said to them, "Be fruitful and increase in number, fill the earth and subdue it. Rule over the fish in the sea and the birds in the sky and over every living creature that moves on the ground" (Genesis 1:26-29).

Adam and Eve were both made in Gods image and God did not pronounce humanity was 'good' until after Eve had been created. In Gen 1:31 God surveyed all he had created, including Adam and Eve and declared it was 'good'. When the creation of humanity is examined in greater detail in chapter two, God states "It is NOT good for the man to be alone". Humankind were both made in Gods image, declared good and commanded to rule over the land and all the living creatures. Together.

In a fascinating statement completely counter culture to the prevailing narrative of the times when the Bible was written, Adam is recorded to have said "That is why a man leaves his mother and father and is united to his wife and they become one flesh". Women in those times were considered property; bought and sold in marriage. The woman would in fact ordinarily and historically (arguably the same tradition persists today) leave HER family to be united to her new husbands family, ownership of the woman effectively being transferred to her husband and his family. By saying that the man shall leave HIS family is therefore a radical statement breaking down preconceptions of ownership in marriage and points to an equality in the partnership.

It is not until after the fall in chapter 3 that this beautiful partnership is ruined. Both man and woman suffer the consequences of their disobedience and frustration is introduced into the relationship. This is of course a root divergence of egalitarians and complementarians. Comps read much into the sequence of events, assuming authority through chronology. My reading of the scripture leads me to hear "do not hear what I am not saying". What I do hear is this: God creates and affirms joint rule, reminds the culture of the time that women are not property and declares that this is all good.
